Every Friday in Señora Merkle’s Spanish class, the students do an activity called “Baile Viernes”, which translates in English to “Dance Friday”. This idea was coined by another Spanish teacher at YHS, Señora Thompson. She then shared the idea with Seńora Merkle. When it comes to teaching Spanish, Seńora Merkle is really big on movement and music mostly because of its cultural relevance. She was asked what was her motivation to start Dance Friday, and said, “It gives the students something to look forward to and sometimes we just need a brain break.” Freshman, Ty Filkovski was asked the difference he thinks Dance Friday makes in his day. He responded, “It makes it more fun and it gets me awake.” Another Freshman, Maddox Bartley was asked how he thinks Dance Friday is beneficial to the students. He answered, “Because it allows students to move around, get their blood pumping, and gives us a brain break” He chose 3 words to describe Dance Friday and those words were fun, creative, and active. Overall Baile Viernes has a very positive outcome on the students here at YHS.
