On August 18th, Yorktown Football kicked off their season with a roaring victory against Anderson High School. The Tigers began their season with a 55-6 victory, as well as a successful showcase for Tiny Tigers and the Yorktown Youth Football League. Seniors Ayden Ewing and Mason Moulton were nominated as players of the week after their performance against Anderson. According to Ewing, the honor “was pretty nice, just shows all the hard work I’ve been putting in paid off.”
Both Ewing and Moulton see their first victory as a starting point for a long, successful season. When asked about their post-season goals, both boys stated they wanted to make a run at the State Championship. Additionally, Moulton stated that as a team captain, his goals were to: “be a good leader and make good decisions on the field.” While it was a triumphant start to the season with Ewing earning 93 yards, 16 carries, and three touchdowns and Moulton earning 253 yards and four touchdowns, Moulton remarked his last season opener as a high school football player was “definitely bittersweet.”
While the football team took care of business on the field, the cheerleaders helped lead the Tiny Tigers program on the sidelines. Senior and captain Sierra Spangler stated, “Tiny Tigers means a lot to me, my first Tiny Tigers was in first grade.” Sierra has participated in Tiny Tigers as a participant and coach since then, and she hopes to see the young girls who participate in Tiny Tigers step up as high school cheerleaders someday.
On the field and the sideline, the Tigers made it a successful home opener game. Hopefully, this signals a prosperous season for both the cheerleaders and football players.
